my curiosity as to how many versions of the Copland concerto Benny Goodman
recorded?<

There are three total, two of which are commonly available. The original
broadcast (and world) premiere performance with the NBC Symphony and Fritz
Reiner has been issued recently on several 'pirate' labels, in varying sound.
This is the weakest of the performances, with a few squeaks and mistakes along
the way. There is a mono Columbia recording with Copland conducting, this has
been out of print since the 50s and is actually quite rare. The other side had
a performance of a Copland work for piano and strings. Then there is the
Stereo Columbia, again with Copland conducting. which has been issued
countless timeswith many different companion pieces, including at least one cd
release.

When someone is talking about the Goodman recording of the Copland, it is most
likely they are talking about the third recording, as it has had by far the
widest distribution.
