Subj: Making and testing reeds

I don't make my own reeds because I'm too lazy, but I did adapt (steal) an
excellent method for determining if an "unsatisfactory" has any hope.

1) Hold the reed by the butt

2) Being careful to avoid using excessive force that could cause permanent
damage to your fingers, wrist or arm, SLAM the tip of the reed into a wall.
(Stands are OK, but remove all music first: you don't want to scatter your
music throughout the wind section. That can be distracting during a concert.)

3) If the reed breaks, it probably wasn't any good anyway.

I have found this method quite effective in relieving excess frustration
caused by working on reeds. My playing is much better as a result. But
please be careful on direction number two. One time, my right hand was in a
cast for two weeks when I was especially disturbed by lack of good reeds. ;-
)
