Moennig never approved of Dampits either - always recommended orange peels
because, he said, the volatile oils evaporating from the orange peels were
better for the wood than the water from the Dampits. I was never quite sure
that oils were what was actually evaporating, but I most of the time still
use orange peels when the rings on my instruments get loose. On the other
hand, I took a couple of lessons with Harold Wright while he was still
playing in Washington D.C. and I noticed that he was using Dampits, not
fruit.
