Vandoren lets you try reeds at the factory because the cost per
reed is low; they must go through one or more middle men and the
retail store marks them up again. At the retail store level, they
can not afford the customer to sample: no one is going to buy reeds
that have been tried. At the factory they can afford to toss them
out and its good promotion for Vandoren.
