Dear Norm,
I can't help with the serial number, but according to Leblanc's own
written publication, the difference between the Esprit and the Sonata lies
in the polycylindrical reversed cone (Esprit) versus the polycylindrical
taper (Sonata). Here is the written description published by Leblanc "The
Esprit has a polycylindrical reversed cone and a 14.61 mm middle bore,
yielding tone and tuning on par with the finest of clarinets. The Sonata
has a small 14.61 mm bore with a polycynlindrical taper."

I teach a student who owns an Esprit. I like this instrument, it
has the playing charecteristics of the higher priced Leblancs (Concerto,
Opus), but at a entry level price. This is an excellent first wooden
instrument.

Best Regards,
Tony Masiello,
Symphony of the West Valley (Sun City Arizona).
