Let your wife call him, but make sure she informs him
that (a) you are not an accomplished performer, but
(b) you wish to receive private lessons on an extended
basis. This will cover the issues with regard to whether
or not it would be appropriate to take lessons from him.

You have the willingness to learn. It is the teacher's
role to honestly determine the lowest level of player
his is willing to work with, and whether or not he is
amenable to having such a student on a long-term basis.

If the teacher is accustomed to teaching students who
are shooting for the Chicago Symphony, he may recommend
a different teacher -- possibly one of his graduate
students, or another local player who would be a better
match for your skill level. Your wife's idea is a
wonderful one, and you will be studying with somebody
appropriate very soon. Best of luck to you!
