Dear Sue:
I've had many students who have sucessfully played with
braces for many years. Two have been 1st chair players at All state.
People are quite adaptable, and, no doubt, it is probably very
uncomfortable, but if the student has a strong desire to play the clarinet,
he/she will be able to overcome the discomfort. The student could ask the
dentist to help by scheduling the appointments so they don't conflict with
lessons and important rehearsals. Also, I think some dentists have made
some guards to protect the lips. But, I have no experience regarding this
and perhaps others can help.
