I recently picked up the music for the string quartet that this famous
Adagio comes from. The adagio section has a key signature of Db, which
probably contributes to the sound you are describing. I haven't
examined it closely yet. I have not seen the version scored for
larger orchestra, so I don't know what other notes may be there.
