I have a Seiko DM-10 that I've always found reliable. I bought it as a
beginner and have been using it steadily for the past four years. It
doesn't have all the fancy things some newer ones do, subdivision of the
beat, et al, but it lays out a straight beat pretty nicely. It's
certainly adequate for all the playing I do, and it would be a great
deal it start someone else on. I think I got it for around $25.
