Yes, I have led the life of a professional musician, albeit a short one. I
chose not to continue because of just what you are stating, long hours,
sometimes little reward, mechanical music making, etc. I also chose not
to continue because of just what I am stating; not being able to produce
in the manner I wished. Practice, research of music, listening AND living
are all part of (or should be) the life of a professional musician. If you
choose this life (I'll emphasize again, your choice) you should be
prepared for the consequences. Do you think its OK for doctors not to
keep abreast of current literature just because they work 16 hours a
day? Its not, and I wouldn't want to be one of their patients.

Again, if you choose this life, it is your responsibility to become as
complete a musician as you can. Not just a clarinettist. Anything less is
an insult to music. And no, I do not research everything that is put on my
stand, but believe me, when I have as important a clarinet part as that on
my stand, you better believe that I make sure I know what I'm playing.
Furthermore, it is not the conductor's responsibility to know that for me,
its mine.

Your choice - Sorry, no sympathy, again

Leslie, Clarinettist who works as a Librarian
