Sometimes they are just thin, hairline cracks, barely noticeable and, if
not completely through the wood, inconsequential, although you can expect
them to get worse with time. Depending upon the wood and the
circumstances, they can be quite noticeable and leak air, destroying the
playability of the instrument. Cracks can be repaired, especially in the
early stages. Properly repaired, the instrument will be essentially as
good as new.
