Dan,
Knowing Ricardo, I'm sure that if the clarinet part that he was
using stated basset clarinet in Bb (is one even made? I know about the
basset clarinet in A, but Bb?) he would use one if one was available in
time for the performance. Since being the principal clarinet in the Met is
an extremely busy job, I don't think Ricardo has the time to do research on
every opera he's performing. Why didn't the conductor of that opera point
out the erroneous part? If the part is put on the stand, we assume that
the conductor picked the edition that he wants to use. Is it our job to be
the music history police?
Also, did you try and contact Ricardo and point out this error off
list? I have his email and address if you want it. It's nice to be
correct in our performances but if you're given a part to play you assume
it to be correct if the conductor doen't say something and we don't have
some leisure time to spend at the library researching every note we're
playing for it's historical accuracy.
I enjoy being enlighted by your expertise but don't assume every
professional musician is as knowledgable as you are in your field (Mozart)
or has the time. Also sometimes it's not WHAT one says but HOW one says
it.

Dan
