Re: aids to performance (alcohol's effects on playing): I now recall
having read an interview with Karl Leister (I think it was Leister) who
advocated complete abstention from alcohol for anyone making a career of
playing the clarinet. This was in The Clarinet some months ago. Seems
a bit severe, but becoming a professional was never a question for me
anyway. He didn't say anything about any other forms of abstinence, but
I assume if you want to play sarabandes knowledgably, it would require
the right sort of background preparation, which would preclude THAT kind
of abstinence.

(BTW, Peter Schickele talked about the origins of the sarabande on his
radio program this week - what a coincidence)
