You are living a life around people who have been trained well. The real
world is not that way. Most high school band teachers (and I believe
this....so if you are one, don't get upset.......just accept that I
believe it!) don't make the effort to get beyond mediocre. They take
their bands to marching contest and their concert ensembles suffer. Their
students do not continue in music beyond high school (it was even a chore
to keep them involved without bribing them with trips to Disney World and
some gawd awful trip to Bermuda or something) because they are not taught
literacy in music. While there are pockets of good programs everywhere,
sadly, the vast majority of public school music programs are extremely
lacking in even the most basic fundamentals of music learning. Try not to
blame the university professors......we do enforce care of instruments.
But when a person treats an instrument badly and we find out and have it
repaired, they are no longer in the music program...but we still have a
wrecked instrument.
