My favorites (and my students'):

Student plastic:

Yamaha
Buffet
(Avoid UMI... Armstrong & Artley, Vito, Jupiter, and most Chinese brands)

Student Wood:

Yamaha 34
Buffet E-11
Older Selmer Signets and some Noblets are OK
Avoid Selmer 200 (seem to be consistently stuffy)

Intermediate Wood:

Yamaha 52 (great deal)
Buffet E-12 (high priced, but a little better quality)
I have a student trying these next week or so plus the Leblanc Sonata,
which I had them order out of curiosity! She is in 9th grade... I could
let you know the choice later if you wish!

I will add that I usually have each student order a Yamaha and a Buffet to
compare. Based on their playing preference, my choice (without looking at
which they are playing), their choice (without looking at which I am
playing), and the parent's choice in the same manner, we all have
consistently picked the same two instruments.

Stu. Wood: Buffet E-11
Int. Wood: Yamaha 52

Only one student preferred the E-12, and could afford it!
