I've not* heard de Peyer live, but in his heyday as a recording artist,
his
sound didn't seem to me to be more badly produced than anyone else's - as
far as one could tell from LPs. Some of the Melos LPs on (I think) the
Oiseau-Lyre label had a rather strange sound quality by present-day
standards. Somewhere in my mother's house is a copy of his (rather rare, I
think) recording of the Bliss quintet; I think his committed playing of
that work overrides any reasonable dislike one might have for his tone.

* Sorry - I remember I did hear him play the Mozart concerto once, but I
don't rememebr when or where; I probably lost the programme.
