Subj: Mazzeo's memorial tribute

I don't think that I made a report to this group about what happened
at the memorial tribute to Rosario Mazzeo that took place in Carmel,
CA about more than a month ago. I don't know why I did not mention
it because it was a remarkable event for clarinet players.

Anyway, it was held at a museum in Carmel and was in no way a
morose event. It was more like a garden party with cocktails, wine,
and food for all. There were at least 200 people there.

The point of interest to clarinet players was that there was a monster
group of invited players (maybe 30) who performed some clarinet choir
music. The group consisted of contrabasses in both E-flat and B-flat,
basset horns, bass clars. and clars. And the players came from all
over America. One came from Switzerland. Then, after the large
group got done, there was a smaller group that played some of the
intimate Mozart clarinet ensembles.

It was a very touching event, though no long speeches about Rosario
took place. Everyone spoke about him, of course, because he was
central to our being there, but there were no eulogies.

Principal players of both the SF Symphony and San Diego Symphony
were there, Lots of clarinet players. Rosie would probably have
approved. His wife, both children and grandchild were all there.
It was a splendid afternoon. My wife and I, both of us having
enjoyed Rosario's friendship, were very glad we went.
