In the main, the clarinet players in NY that had the important
jobs, and the key free lance players were all men. Occasionally,
one of them might take a young lady to his studio for purposes
other than playing clarinet. It is called an "assignation."

I once went for a lesson with one of the big guns and showed
up at whatever time I was supposed to be there. I knocked,
and the person (whose name I do not choose to discuss) came
to the door and opened it, keeping his body behind the door.
I think he was as naked as a jaybird but I can't be sure because
the door was in the way, But at a minimum he had no shirt on.
I heard female giggling in the room. He told me to come back
in an hour. When I returned, I got my lesson.
