Craig,

They are probably arecopyrighted in some way. Copyright law hold that a
creation (compostion, book, poem, etc.) is copyrighted at the moment of
creation.

Before the new law was passed you did have to go register to obtain
copyrights. This is no longer the case, though it is recommended.
