Flutter is created by the drag of the tape across the head, resulting in
minute rapid variations in tape speed. Flutter is first recorded on the
tape. On playback, more is added. It is usually worse when played back on
a lower quality machine. Closed-loop dual capstan drive systems can
minimize flutter by keeping the tape from slipping.
