According to my sources, the law is now 50 years for public domain, no matter
how recent the edition (photocopying excluded). Verbal permission for
anything is considered legally binding, but only from the legal executor of
an estate or legal rep of a publisher. Best to get it in writing.
To circumvent the copyright issue on public performance, learn how to
transpose. As long as you buy the music and don't violate any
photocopying/rewrite laws, you're ok. Copyright laws do not apply to writing
in names of notes in difficult passages, even if you are transposing. It's
the same as marking in dynamics or marking difficult passages. The other way
to do it is to write it out for yourself and memorize it, but buy the
music....don't photocopy. That's why the Dahl Duets for clarinets are out of
print now. The cost was high to begin with, but many who wanted it were
zeroxing. Now it's impossible to buy.
