Besides, Comic, if you follow the rules for copyrighting, you get more
respect for honoring those rules and the wishes of the eststes of dead
composers, and in the future might be able to publish or have published or
make a recording of a legal transcrpition endorsed by the people who control
the rights. After all, more people can play the piece and have a reason to
buy the piece and that means more $$$$$$
for the estate/publishers.
As a bonus, I got one piece from the estate of a dead composer for free
because the executrix of the estate was still negotiating with the company. I
then told her I wanted to transcribe it for alto sax, but would not copy it
or loan it our. She eradily agreed, saying that the composer would have been
thrilled since he was especially proud of that piece and wanted it to be
performed. What a nice lady!! Besides, if someone else wants to transcribe
it, even though the idea was mine, let them. Then I can learn more about the
process and have some less than ideal transcription to complain about and
legally make minor adjustments and recommend performance practices more in
keeping with what sounds good on the instrument.]
But I digress.......
