Oh, Comic=bigfoot--------

<What! It's reasonable to ignore copyrights?>

Let's talk about copyrights and transcribing.

1. I always buy the music in question.
2. I always ask for permission from publishers, estates of dead composers,
etc., or learn whether the music in question is considered public domain, in
which case copyright laws, such as for rented materials and music of living
composers and of certain dead composers with huge estates and , quite
frankly, greedy families, are not the same. With public domain materials,
there is much more flexibility for copying, rearranging, etc.
3. With the obtained permission, I explain that although I can transpose at
sight , I prefer to wite the part out BY HAND so that I minimize a peculiar
in-perfromance phenomenon called the "Brain Fart,"during which the performer,
for a split second, remembers neither seeing the music before nor having
practiced it 52, 312 times. Amazingly enough, most say yes to me, as long as
I don't make copies, sell it at ICS conventions, etc.
Now, let's look at the rep that already exisits for Eb clarinet.....the
Molter concerti.
Those are for clarinet in D. We have 3 choices:
1. Go buy a D clarinet (I hear Buffet is making a decent D clarinet and
selling them for about $5000 apiece)
2. Transpose something, after checking out copyrights, etc.
3. Go to Tiefnort or Eisenach, Germany to visit the Molter Archives and
create your own orchestral reduction or piano score in the key you
need.(Buying the D clarinet is cheaper)
Mostly, publishers are willing to give permission if you buy a copy of the
music first.
And always, always, pay the ASCAP fees on any recordings you make of the
performance, whether your group sells the tape as a fund-raiser or the tapes
are for your personal archives.
So, with that settled, what do you do for Eb and bass clarinet solos?
