Subj: New topic...when to transcribe?

I realize I am opening a floodgate here, but I am interested in others'
opinions about transcribing. How does one know when it's appropriate, other
than actually writing it out and working on it? What are some things I can
look for in a piece to see if it will work? Do we have enough quality
reportoire to explore without creating new transcriptions? The state of the
literature for Eb and bass clarinets is pretty grim, as we all know. Also, I
can not get enough Hindemith. I have played everything (except the Quintet,
and it will be a cold day you-know-where before I will be able to find the
strings for it) and have started transcribing one of the viola sonatas for
clarinet. I have also played his sonatas for flute (Eb clar), oboe (soprano
sax, for which there are 3 origonal standard works), bassoon (bass clarinet
and bari sax), and the Trauermusik (clarinet). But I want more.
I look at Kent Kennan's work on Prokofiev's Sonata in D as a model of sorts.
It was well done, but there are minor details which, after comparison with
the original flute version, I have modified. Is that a
bad/arrogant/presumptuous thing to do?
Any thoughts?
