One generally is assigned an opera at the Met and the person assigned
it plays all of it, with the exception of illness. Herb Blayman
told me that he was not doing Magic Flute one season and the
other co-principle clarinet got ill. Herb was at a soccer game with
his kid when the cops came, found him, and dragged him off to the
Met.

The other clarinet player at the met is Joe Rabbai and the last time
I heard Joe had been ill. I hope he is better. A lovely man and
a fine clarinet player. He was first in the Israel Phil many, many
years ago. We worked together in NY here and there and I knew his
wife who passed away right after the birth of their daughter, Debbie.
