I use almost every reed in a box of Vandoren's without too much
fuss. One thing I do though is the buy 6 boxes at a time every
now and then, and let them sit, often for a couple years. I
must have close to two dozen unopened boxes of Vandoren V12's at
home right now.

I find that after they have aged a while, they are more
consistent. But I do appreciate having varying strengths in a
box, since I like to have a bit of variety in my reeds. That
way when other things change (like weather, or the room you're
playing in, or the people you're playing with) I have the choice
of using a harder or softer reed.

I also try not to play on them too much at first. But in
general, I play on reeds for weeks and sometimes months at a
time. They last quite well for me. I most likely use only one or
two boxes a year - and use just about all the reeds in the box.
So if I buy six boxes a year, they start to pile up over time.
