Subj: Which school in NE?
Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 21:28:48 -0500

I'm looking to transfer school for next year and seeing as the
deadlines are coming up quickly (They make them really early these
days!) I'm looking for any comments or suggestions.

My requirements are: In the NE USA. (I'm from Montreal, and I'd prefer
if it could stay within a reasonable day's drive)

I've come up with:
New England
Peabody
Eastman
Northwestern

as what appear to be good choices. Any opinions? Did I miss out on a
really good place?

In order to avoid lectures on staying put, I'll give a brief reason as
to my desire to switch school:
I'm interested in performing, and the performance level at my current
school is just not high enough. The facilities are great, people
really nice, I like my teacher. But it's very difficult when I walk by
practise rooms and can't tell whether it's people in the music ed
course learning new instruments or people's major instrument.

Another benefit for me would be a good early music programme. I'm
quite an avid recorder player, and so Oberlin isn't totally out of
question, since they have a great early music programme.
That's where I do all my exciting ensemble work where I am: in Early
music studio, on recorder.

Thanks very much for your help! For auditions, I have Weber Concerto
#2 ready, and can do the Grand Duo, but I'm thinking I should have a
more contemporary piece. Hindemith? Martinu? I've been listening to
recordings to try and decide, but obviously I can't get together
something that's too difficult if I have a limited amount of time.
