I'm not absolutely certain, but they used to make a big deal about it as a
philosophical difference between them and the big companies like RCA and
Columbia. The Holst suite recordings were, according to the record jacket,
done with three mics. And the same applies to a recording Telarc did of
Ravel's Bolero, Daphnis and Cloe suite, and Pavane with the St. Louis
Symphony in Powell Symphony Hall (Terrific acoustics -- I've played there).
The Mercury "Living Presence" series recordings were also done this way,
and still sound pretty good for their age.
