Subj: The new Galper Scale book - a review
Date: Sat, 22 Nov 1997 10:38:24 -0500

As a reviewer, I get advance copies of new materials, and publications. Abe
Galper's new book titled "The Upbeat Baermann Melodic Scale Studies" is a hot
new book based on the Baermann Scale studies, with one big difference. The
scales, patterns are constructed to start on the upbeat. This pattern gives
direction to the exercises similarly to the method of direction that the great
woodwind teacher Marcel Tabiteau used. Instead of 1234 he uses 1 2341 2341.
The book was written for all levels, including younger players, as it uses
eighth notes in cut time.
Abe includes many ( I mean MANY) fingering combinations, that are directly above
the passages. He also gives tips on practicing.
The print is well spread out, nice and big which is easy to read. Very high
paper quality.
Included are Scales, Major, and Minor (both Melodic, and Harmonic), Broken
Chords, returning Scales, Dominant Sevenths, Thirds, Sixths (which incorporate
Sevenths, and Fifths), Octaves, and Diminished Sevenths.
Another good point is that the order of the scales is how it should be. He
starts in C (a min. follows), and then adds 1 sharp, one flat, and so on. I have
the Fischer- Baermann , and the order is a mess.
To order the book in the US. Luyben is the Distributor (800)258-9236. Cost is
$14.95 US. In Canada, Waterloo is the publisher.
