To my understanding, the University of Michigan is actually
a private institution. Michigan State University, on the
other hand (where I assume Elsa still teaches), is a state
school, receiving funding through Michigan's education budget
and subject to review and regulation by Michigan's powers that
be. I found myself thinking along the lines of quality education
rather than adhering to the proviso that there be a conservatory
atmosphere. Regardless of the general education requirements,
the physical environment is also not particularly "conservatory-
like", so UM might drop out of contention if the conservatory
aspect is particularly important.
