I would like to tap the collective wisdom of the members of the list on
the above topic. This question is being asked for a person who has an
undergraduate degree from a small-to-medium sized university, and wants to
enter a graduate school to pursue a master's degree in clarinet
performance. She is an excellent player, and has quite a lot of
experience in many performance situations, including solo recitals,
chamber music, and orchestras. She has now decided that she wants to
spend some time and effort to trying for a career in orchestral
performance, and perhaps eventually to become a private teacher or teacher
at the college level.

The requirements for the school are that it must be in the US, and have
enough of a prestigious reputation as a performance school that listing a
degree from the instution on a resume will arouse the attention of anyone
reading it. The university should have a well-developed performance
program, a conservatory-like atmosphere, and be highly competitive. The
clarinet professor's credentials and reputation as a teacher are even more
important than his/her credentials as a performer, but the teacher should
be one who has contacts at the highest levels in the profession.

Given those criteria, what schools would be on your list of the top three
or four instutions in the country, and who is/are the clarinet
professor(s) there whom you would recommend. Please use your judgement as
to whether to send responses to the list or to me privately.
