Subj: Principal Section Players not playing in Concertos

Here's something that I've been wondering. The tradition of the Principal player
of a section not playing in Concerto's. Where did that originate? If there is a
Symphony, and a Concerto (Piano for instance), the Principal player plays the
Sym. then does not play for the Concerto. Of course I'm speaking of orchestras
that have the personnel to do that, not the groups that only have 2 regular wind
players.
