I put a small red dot (punched from red plastic tape) on the bell of my A.
When you're playing alot, the slight weight difference between the Bb and A
isn't sometimes apparent.

For a "Right horn" story here's one:

I was playing in a wind octet as part of a conductor's workshop at
the U of Wis one summer. One of the pieces for the workshop was the
Stravinsky Octet. This was the first time I was playing that piece. One
of the graduate conductors was up and we were on the second movement and
going attaca into the third movement (starts with solo bassoon then bassoon
& clarinet duet). The professor let the student go for a while (6 or 7
lines of clarinet) and then stopped the group and asked the grad student
conductor what was wrong. After he exhausted all the things (too fast, too
loud/soft, beat wasnt' clear, no expression, etc) he could think of the
professor pointed out that the clarinet (me) was on the wrong horn.
Everyone had quite the laugh. I pointed out that it seemed to sound like
Stravinsky. In future performances I have remembered to switch horns.
