Re: picking up the right clarinet.

During a rehearsal years ago (with a conductor who we had little
respect, let alone confidence) the 2nd clarinetist and I started the
Sibelius Violin Concerto on the Bb, instead of the A. It really was a
fluke, but the sad part is that the conductor didn't know the difference
(the strings did!). I almost played the opening of the Sibelius 1st
Symphony on the wrong horn last year. Had the instrument up to play,
looked at the conductor (who was giving a downbeat), realized I had the
wrong damn instrument, winked at him, swapped instruments, and played
the introduction. Whew!!
