My first clarinet teacher, after studying at least 5 years with
him on plastic Artley, said it was time for me to get a new
clarinet. Me not knowing a lot about them at the time, just
took his advice and ordered a Bb Buffet RC. I ordered it from a
dealer in Quebec, who didn't have any in stock at the time - so
he special ordered it for me from France. It was and still is a
great instrument - I got lucky I guess, since I just took what
came in. Several years later my teacher picked out an A Buffet
RC for me as well. I'm also happy with that horn. And a few
years later, my teacher picked out an R13 Eb for me (he had
about 5 Buffets to choose from). It's a great horn, but I
always wonder what an RC Eb would have been like in comparison.

In any event, I've been happy with my clarinets. Many years
later, my teacher moved out west, and took a few lessons with
the clarinetist who replaced him in the symphony here. At one
point, he was discussing resonating fingerings with me, and that
fact that I frequently used more fingers down than he did. He
thought my fingerings would be flat, put a tuner in front of me
and I was bang on in tune. He couldn't believe his eyes - said
he had so many students that played flat in the throat tones
with the resonating fingerings. I then mentioned that maybe it
was because my clarinets were RC's. At that point he got all
excited, got out his calipers and started measuring my
instrument. Guess he hadn't come across to many RC's in his
teaching career!
