Subj: publisher problems

Has anyone ever had problems getting good quality printed music from a
publisher? I've recently been through HELL trying to get QUALITY printed music
from Shawnee Press (the American distributors of Chester).

I ordered Magnus Lindberg's "Quintet" for clarinet and strings from them to the
tune of $120 US. They sent the music to me and what I got was less than
satisfactory. A lot of the accidentals were blurred or unreadable (this piece
moves very quickly mind you), it was printed on cheap paper, the parts were
obviously formatted to facilitate page turns yet I got something copied single
sided, and they were not bound but instead sent to me paper-clipped together.
I called them and told them what I had been sent and they said they'd have new
parts printed up at no charge and apoliogized for the mistake.

Well.... I got the new parts today.... it was a cheap photocopy that was
reduced in size so that not only were the accidentals not readable, a large
portion of the notes were unreadable as well!! This is not printed
music!!!!!!!!!!!!! (at least as I know it) I called them and AGAIN expressed my
not being pleased and they said that all they could do was to give me a refund
and have me send the parts back to them.

This is a terrific piece of music that is a worthy addition to our repertoire
and we can't even get decent stuff to play. I've played a lot from manuscript
copies as well as handwritten originals and never have I seen something such as
this, and this music was engraved!

My question is.... what if anything can be done so that this doesn't happen to
someone else and so that this piece gets the playings that it so rightfully
deserves?

Thanks for listening to me vent. That's all for now.

Best regards,
