I recommend a Yamaha YCL-20 plastic clarinet. You can order a new one for
around $375 from the Woodwind/Brasswind at 1-800-348-5003 and many other
places! However, since it is marching band, you can hunt for used
instruments for a lot less! My feeling is that $100 is a great price for
something in playing condition, even though some will be better than
others! I have said before that Artley is made by UMI and all of their
plastic clarinets seem to have the same problems with intonation, et al.
Some of the others that I suggest you stay away from are Armstrong, King &
Conn (not very common, but also UMI), Jupiter, Vito, and some of Bundy's.
Every once in while you might find one you like, but I have not encountered
one. The Selmer 300 seems to play more in tune than the older Bundy's.
Also, check out Buffet B-12. when you are hunting for used horns, try a
lot but don't forget to drag a tuner along to see if you be satisfied!
