Subj: Bass Clarinet Notation...again!
Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 14:22:06 -0500

There has been an extended, and very useful thread during the last couple
of months on Bass Clarinet notation...and I, for one, gathered an enormous
amount of useful information from it. However, I would like to confirm one
point that I am yet unsure of...

...are Bass Clarinet parts notated in the bass clef for "Bass Clarinet in
Bb" generally written in Bb or C? [I recognize there may be an occasional
exception!] In other words, do you generally read the bass clef
directly...or transpose from bass clef C to Bb? [For example,
Shostakovich's Symphony No. 4...is the eighth note at rehearsal 5 D on the
instrument or E?

Thanks...Fred S.
