I'm sure we will all overlook your (classless)derision. And for what its
worht, although none of us book Carnegie Hall recitals, with 37 years of
intense classical study under my belt, I am more than equipped to play the
Saint-Saens(or most of the other classical clarinet repertoire, (but not
hypermodern!) at any tempo whatsoever, including Mr. Morales'. I stick to
my musical feeling (and Mr. Kell's and Mr. Stoltzmans) that in this instance
slower is more emotional.

First of all Fred, for someone who says they have 37 years experience
you sure dont sound like it. Someone with that much experience would not
have to feel like they had to validate their playing to anyone. And to say
that you can play any piece at any tempo seems very childish. Anyone can
play the Saint-Saens at Mr. Morales' tempo but to do it as convincing or as
smooth as he did it is another story. It seems to me that you are a very
frustrated person who has an ego problem. You dont have to try to validate
yourself because you played Stars and Stripes for a living. I think playing
in a military band is a more than a exceptable way to make a living. As for
comparing your muscial ideas to those of artists that we have heard of, I
think its time to get you own interpretation of pieces. Grow buddy grow!!!!!
Mr Morales did and had a very nice interpretation of the Saint-Saens. He
didnt have to go to a recording to get his ideas. He used the natural talent
that he possess and gave his own interpretation of it not someone elses. Why
does everyone have to play it like Mr. Kell or Mr. Stoltzman.(god help us
all, bring out the caffeine) The pieces flows so much better at the slightly
faster tempo. You can still be emotional at any tempo you dont have to do it
at snails speed for it to be that way. With your experience I would think
that you have run into many people who didnt like the same works you did.
Well looks like you met another. As far as you saying you never had a
problem with reeds when the weather changes you are a lucky guy. Even with
my limited experience I have had reeds change on me (even the good ones) You
must be one of a select group that that hasnt happened to. Although I might
not have quite the same experience that you do Fred I can tell you that I
have finished HIGH SCHOOL, Undergrad, and Masters. Although I am much
younger than you I too have a lot of classical experience. (Broadway,
Metropolitan Opera sub lists) I know its not the military but I think its
comparable. And by the way, your attack on my musicality was probably more
classless than anything I said to you in my past post. Thank you.
love,
