My first clarinet teacher was wise
He'd been around quite a bit, seen people, heard things etc.

Whenever I used to get impatient at a lesson, having to repeat something
three or four times, he would shake his head and say; "You'll begin to
understand in 25-30 years."
I thought, "What's he talking about? Here I'm playing and I'll begin to
understand in 25-30 years time?

He was right. There is something with the passage of years that gets
you more know-how and you keep improving on that.

The other thing that he used to tell me was: "During your lifetime a lot
of people will give you advice. Don't shrug them off right away. Listen
to what they have to say.
If it's foolish ,just laugh it off in your heart."

"BUT if they say something good, then you will have learned something."

My older brother had a hardware store. I noticed, whenever I visited
him in Edmonton, that he didn't speak much to the salesmen.
I asked him about that and he replied "If I do the talking, I won't
learn anything.
Maybe I'll learn from the other person."

Another thing my first teacher told me" When you hear an artist play, if
it's good, you might say this or that.
If the artist is bad, there is nothing to say."

The reason I bring this up is the Ricardo Morales recital.

It must have been good because everyone had something to say.

If it were bad, nobody would say anything.
