It means if you tie a string to the thumbrest and hang
the clarinet (including mouthpiece and barrel) by the string
the longitudinal centerline of clarinet will be horizontal.
However, darker clarinets tend to have the bell end closer to
the ground (a lower frequency cutoff, so of course the low end
_has_ to hang lower). Jazz clarinets tend to have the mouthpiece
hanging closer to the ground. Those of us with with an adjustable
thumbrest can get either sound; indeed, that thumbrest makes
_all_ the difference.

Ducking the chipped mouthpieces and sliding on cork grease ...
