I can only say that I heard Ricardo play the Nielsen at an ICA convention, and
from where I was sitting, myself and my student (one of the competition winners)
both thought that his sound was a bit bright, and edgy. BUT- we heard him that
night play the Weber Concertino with the Cin. Pops, and he sounded great. AND,
the recording of the Nielsen sounded great (wonderful tone)- none of the
qualities I described earlier. I don't think the recording was "tonally
enhanced", so it was a mystery to me - maybe it was where I was sitting.
I myself like, and take the Saint Saens at the upper tempos. Most players wish
they had Ricardo's ability. One of the auditions that he took, the other player
in the section, was so intimidated, that he discounted, and did not like Ricardo
(was likened to having Issac Stern audition for a section job). I was told that
by the Principal player, of that Orchestra (one of the Big, Big ones).

Of course I understand about reeds, but for whatever reason, I believe that
at Mr. Morales' level, it just shouldn't happen. As I said in my initial
post, something seemed wrong with his reed- it seemed too hard as it had an
airy undertone. Can anybody comment on that?
