I could've sworn he played an Opus, which, since it is unstained, more brown
streaks show up. I have a Concerto; I wonder what a rosewood one would sound
like. Wow! All this updating sure leaves you in the dust! Just when you
think you have the best, it is outdone. How frustrating! Does rosewood give
off basically the same sound as grenadilla? Is this some new way to break
the fad of black clarinets?
Chris

Chris,
The instrument Ricardo was playing was most likely an Opus acoustic, which
forms the basis of the new Leblanc Rosewood clarinet, model Symphony VII
which will be released soon. It also has a number of other features not
found on either Concerto or Opus clarinets that Ricardo wanted. This clarinet
was the last thing I developed before I left Leblanc this past July.
The Rosewood has certain features of response and tone that are truly
appealing: a more mellow quality, a softer (in texture) tone, rounder high
tones and more response in the soft dynamic levels. Ricardo felt he wanted a
clarinet like that after he heard so many fine oboist play rosewood oboes. He
was right. The Rosewood is not for everybody, but it is wonderful for
certain players and in certain performance contexts.
