I don't know what the adminstrators' policy is about making the
subscription list known, but here's a few guesses. First of all
there's spam, which of course isn't your motivation, Nicholas, but
the feeling is probably that if listservs go back to allowing the
"who" request, it's a danger. More to the point is that there are
probably members who for any number of reasons don't wish their
presence to be known -- maybe it's plain shyness. People who "lurk"
sometimes have other reasons beside their fame or notoriety --
sometimes they just enjoy reading the list more knowing that nothing
is required or asked of them, and I'll bet the administrators feel
they deserve privacy. On the other hand, I'd also wager that if you
wanted to contact someone you suspect is on the list and made a
public request, you'd hear back from him or her.
