Subj: More on Jack Benny

With apologies in advance to those of you who have already heard
this one, I'd like to retell one of my favorite Jack Benny
radio skits.

The guest in this skit was Isaac Stern, and the routine went
approximately as follows:

The scene opens with Stern at his home music studio practicing a difficult
selection on the violin. The front-door chimes ring.

STERN: Hmmm? I wonder who that can be. I wasn't expecting anyone.

He opens the door.

STERN (surprised): Why, it's Jack Benny. What a pleasant surprise. What
brings you here?

BENNY: Gee, Isaac, I'm so delighted that you've moved in down the street
from me, that I decided that the friendly thing for me to do would be to
formally welcome you to the neighborhood.

STERN: How thoughtful of you, Jack. But what is that thing you're
carrying in your hand? It looks like a violin case.

BENNY: It is. I thought it would be especially neighborly of me if I
offered to play some duets with you.

STERN (feeling trapped): All right Jack, come with me into the studio.

STERN (sotto voce): Let's just get this over with.

BENNY: I didn't bring any music. What would you like to play?

STERN: Pick anything from my library or anything on a music stand.

BENNY: Oh, look Isaac, how about this one? I've always loved Paganini.

STERN (in total exasperation): Jack, that's "Page Nine."
