 David,

I use the Hite Artistic Studies also. Before they came out, I used an
edition that I now find hard to believe that they ever printed such a
disorganized "every key on the same page" version. I=A0 don't bother much
with the harmonic scale, as the melodic scale to me is more important.=A0 I
would recommend playing through a major, and it's minor key each day. For
tone, connections work,=A0 play each exercise at quarter=3D 50 (playing
sixteenths- thats' the fast version.)=A0 Then slow it down to half of that,
then half of the last tempo until you are playing quarter notes at 50 from
the original sixteenth's as are written.
=A0 For speed study - tempi between 120 and 240 is what I use for the beat (
the beat is the quarter, but playing sixteenths), slurred, and tongued.=A0
Sorry I couldn't respond earlier, but my computer got toasted.=A0 All of my
data was lost, and my computer had to be reloaded. I've been up till 3AM
the last 3 nights restoring my Computer, as it=A0 had the mother of all
crashes. Fortunately, I had everything backed up to not only a second drive
(which was corrupted, and also had to be erased) , but to a separate zip
 disc.=20
The slower tempi are to me the most important, as that is where the tone
 work takes place.=A0
Abe Galper=A0 is coming out with another version of the Baermann 3 that is
quite good. I have a preview copy (I wrote the intro for the book) and am
enjoying it immensely. It encourages slow practice, as it uses eighth notes
instead of sixteenth's. It also starts the scales on the upbeat which
encourages direction, and musicality.=A0 It will be coming out in the next
few weeks, and also there will be a Sax version.

 Subject: Baermann warmup

OK David - I'm taking the "no long tone" challenge! I have a couple of=20
questions about the way you use Baermann.

Do you have, and will you share your daily Baermann routine? (metronome=20
 speeds, etc)

Which edition do you use, and do you have a preference? I use Hite,=20
mostly because all the exercises for one key are together. I realize he's=20
added some stuff, but haven't checked too carefully to see if other stuff=20
 is different.

Do you do harmonic minor, melodic minor, or both?

As a long time long tone user, I'm going to try Baermann instead, just to=20
see what happens. I actually much prefer Hamelin, and have a whole=20
routine for that which I've been using. Improper Baermann practice seems=20
to make my hands tight, so I've not used it much since graduate school=20
 days.

 Any insights greatly appreciated.
