I have been listening to a recording of a recording this morning
(sorry don't have the performer's name) and I find the person's
tone and style so wispy, light and flute-like that it is driving me
crazy. Is this a type of playing that some people deliberately choose
to play?

I have never been a fan of the flute because I find the players tend
to go for this ethereal light sound. But recently I heard an excellent
woodwind quartet where the flute player (a principle in the opera
orchestra here in toronto)had a very firm, almost aggressive sound.
It really changed my view of what the flute can do.
