My student was playing so flat that I even doublechecked to make
sure she wasn't playing an A clarinet! Then I actually tried playing her
instrument with her set-up, and I couldn't get a sound out of it without
adjusting my airflow so the airstream into a laminar flow parallel to the
"inside" of the reed, and with an embouchure more conducive to honking! Of
course, I could not control anything this way! We replaced her reed (she's
using Rico 3, by the way) and we've been spending a LOT of time working on
adjusting reed position. We've also been working heavily on breath
support. Her pitch is much improved, and she's supporting her tones much
better! (Now, if she could completely cover the holes....).
