Gelenne,
The secret to a "jazzy" tone on bass clarinet is to use a very
soft reed on the right mouthpiece. It doesn't matter which instrument as
much as the reed-mouthpiece set-up. In fact, I'll bet that a plastic bass
clarinet would have a brighter, more biting sound than a good wooden one.
The same way jazz flutists like to use cheap student flutes because they
sound more funky. I have a Hite mouthpiece which I don't use any more
because it is too bright and 'buzzy' for symphonic work. It sounds great
in jazz, though.
