The upper lip is a major contributor toward flexibility (as is tongue
position - back) and towards a beautiful, dark sound. We use upper lip
pressure in different ways for different registers, volumes, and
particular colors we wish to produce....that is not to say that our basic
sound changes much, we just enhance it with the upper lip. Upper lip is
the one part of the embouchure that should move and adjust....as do the
corners. In fact, it is on long tones that one begins to become sensitive
as to how to use the upper lip and corners...not to mention air speed.
